Clinical excellence

An integrated model of care, built for complexity

Pearl Haven's clinical model is grounded in the same principles that define the world's leading integrative treatment centers: evidence-based therapies, a licensed interdisciplinary team, whole-person care, and a long-term commitment to outcomes, not just stabilization.

Hawai'i's only continuum of care for sexually exploited and traumatized youth
For years, Hawai'i had no residential treatment option designed specifically for child survivors of sex trafficking. Pearl Haven was built to fill that gap and is now a nationally recognized model.

Our program

A continuum of care designed for lasting healing

Healing at Pearl Haven combines clinical care with experiential programs that help youth rebuild trust, confidence, and connection. Through equine therapy, surf, music, arts and culture, culinary experiences, and gardening, young people are supported through a continuum of care designed to foster long-term healing and resilience.

Why our methods work

Precision treatment for complex trauma

CSEC survivors carry a unique constellation of trauma. Our clinical team uses a combination of the most rigorously studied therapies for complex PTSD, adapted specifically for adolescent survivors of sexual exploitation.

Evidence-based

EMDR Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing with specialized CSEC training. EMDR helps young women safely process traumatic memories by reducing their emotional charge and building new neural pathways.

"EMDR has helped many of our youth work through difficult experiences, build resilience, and develop healthier ways to cope with stress and emotional challenges."
Evidence-based

Neurofeedback

Non-invasive therapy training the brain to self-regulate through real-time feedback. Neurofeedback directly addresses the dysregulated nervous system at the root of complex trauma presentations.

"Through neurofeedback, we’ve seen youth gain better control over their emotions, improve focus, and become more confident in managing everyday stressors."
Co-occurring needs

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Four core domains: emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness, taught in individual and group settings to build lasting life skills.

"DBT gives our youth practical tools they can use every day to manage emotions, navigate relationships, and make more thoughtful decisions during difficult moments."
Daily

Individual & Group Therapy

7,634 hours of individual therapy and 848 hours of group therapy in 2025 alone, delivered by licensed therapists with specialized training in CSEC and complex trauma.

"Individual and group therapy provide youth with opportunities to process their experiences, learn from one another, and build the skills needed for lasting personal growth."
Systems approach

Family Engagement

Healing doesn't happen in isolation. Structured family therapy sessions, caregiver coaching, and coordinated reintegration planning strengthen the whole family system alongside the resident.

"When families are actively involved in treatment, youth often feel more supported, strengthen important relationships, and experience greater success throughout their healing journey."
Integrated

Accredited On-Site Education

A full academic program within the therapeutic environment. Diploma-track credits, individualized academic plans, and specialized educators who understand trauma-informed learning.

"On-site education allows our youth to continue making academic progress in a supportive environment while building confidence and preparing for future opportunities."

The quotes above reflect staff observations from direct work with the youth we support.

Healing beyond the therapy room

Healing with intention, beyond the therapy room

Trauma lives in the body, in identity, in the severed sense of belonging. Our integrative model means every surf session, hula practice, and morning in the garden is purposeful and therapeutic; grounded in evidence and rooted in Hawai'i.

Equine-Assisted Healing

Horses respond to nervous system cues that words cannot reach. Equine-assisted therapy teaches emotional regulation and trust through somatic, relational connection.

Somatic · Relational

Surf Therapy

The ocean teaches the body that it is capable, strong, and alive. Surf therapy reconnects young women to their physical selves and builds shared courage within the peer group.

Movement · Nature

Hawaiian Cultural Grounding

'Ōlelo Hawai'i, hula, ike values, and community connection: 36% of our residents identify as Native Hawaiian, and culture is a clinical tool as much as it is a homecoming.

Identity · Belonging

Creative Arts & Music

Expressive arts therapy creates space for emotions that words can't hold. Visual art, music, and collaborative creation, including the Smiling Wahine mural by artist Jared Emerson.

Expressive Arts Therapy

Kōkua Farms & Community Service

Tending the land and serving the community builds purpose, identity, and a sense of contribution. Residents grow food, practice mālama ʻāina, and give back.

Community · Purpose

Hōkū Group Services

Peer resilience and community processing through structured group experiences. One of Ho'ōla Nā Pua's five founding pillars: building solidarity and belonging.

Peer Resilience

Proven outcomes

Data-driven healing. Human-centered care.

Our outcomes are tracked and published annually through the Youth Experience Survey (Y.E.S.) Report, presented by Dr. Dominique Roe-Sepowitz of ASU's Office of Sex Trafficking Intervention Research, one of the most rigorous evaluations of a CSEC program in the country.
